The Akron Board of Education seeks results-driven individual to fill the role of Executive Director Human Resources.  This senior leadership position provides strategic direction and oversight of all human resources departmental initiatives, including talent acquisition/retention, employee relations, performance management, compliance, labor relations/negotiations, professional development, and organizational culture. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned Human Resources professional with progressive roles within the Human Resources function, a commitment to staff excellence, and experience working within an urban school setting.



This position is assigned to a year-round schedule and is affiliated with the School Employees Retirement Services (SERS) pension system.  The annual salary range for this position is $154166.04 - $186,543.38. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Executive Director Human Resources provides strategic direction and management of all human resources departmental functions and initiatives and aligns human resources practices to the District’s mission, vision and strategic plan.  The Executive Director Human Resources develops and implements strategies designed to reinforce talent management, performance management and development, employee engagement, labor relations, management of collective bargaining agreements and processes, compliance, and HRIS reporting systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement effective recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention strategies to attract and maintain a high-quality, diverse workforce.
  • Oversee employee relations, labor negotiations, performance evaluations, and disciplinary processes in compliance with district policies and applicable laws.
  • Develop and implement procedures for salary administration, compensation policies, job description reviews, job analysis, and external salary survey projects.
  • Develop, implement and monitor key performance indicators for the department and organization.
  • Lead district-wide HR compliance efforts, ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., FMLA, FLSA, EEO, ADA).
  • Collaborate with district leadership, school principals, and union representatives to foster a culture of collaboration, equity, and accountability.
  • Manage HR data systems and analytics to drive informed decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and manage the budget for the Human Resources department.
  • Supervise and support the HR department staff, providing mentorship and promoting professional growth.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the Superintendent and Board of Education on all human resources-related matters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, or a combination of a Bachelor’s degree and progressive human resources experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive HR leadership experience, with at least 3 years in a senior management role.
  • Prior experience working in a unionized setting.

PREFERRED:

  • SPHR, SHRM-SCP, or similar certification
  • Prior experience in an educational setting (K-12 or higher education)
  • Prior experience with change management and organizational development programs
